Alberta looking to fast-track foreign doctors through it’s licences process

The Alberta International Medical Graduates Association is drafting a proposal to fast-track foreign doctors through the province’s qualification process. With this proposal, the association hopes doctors in Alberta will qualify for their medical licences in less time.

The process of obtaining a medical licence in Alberta currently takes between three and seven years, costing foreign doctors thousands of dollars.

“We’re trying to produce a model that would send physicians to underserved parts of the province,” says Wayne Bobrosky, a consultant with Plan Net, the company charged with the proposal. The need for a faster, more efficient system is a “no-brainer”, adds Bobrosky.

Alberta is currently facing a severe shortage of family physicians. About 200,000 people are without a family doctor in the province.
